So... did we ever figure out why Palin?

So maybe I missed this, but has anyone figured out the reason WHY McCain picked Palin? I mean part of me thinks the simple answer is "he thought it would bring him female voters", but I mean god damn there are plenty of other republican females he could have picked that would have at least not made you wonder what was going on.

I mean it's clear to just about anyone that she is a fool. Clearly doesn't know shit about shit. So what was the reason? She comes across to me as likely a pretty evil behind the scenes person. Pretty on the outside evil on the inside kind of person. Part of me thinks maybe this was a stealth way to get a far right wing idiot puppet in to the office of the president. Other than that maybe mccain honestly thought she would be received well? But I can't believe his handlers would allow such a stupid move to be made.
