Dear Representative Marshall:

I suspect you share my concern over recent remarks by your colleague, Representative Michelle Bachmann, that accused me, and others on the left side of the political spectrum in America, of being "anti-American." In my opinion, this is no time to return to the McCarthy era. Republicans are fanning the flames of discontent among their followers and creating the kind of political climate that led to the Kennedy assassination.

I am asking you to nip this in the bud. Censuring Representative Bachmann will send a message to Republican leaders that a more civil tone of rhetoric is required in this time of financial crisis and uncertainty. Allowing Representative Bachmann's comments to go unchallenged will be perceived, by me and others, as condonation.

I am a liberal, and I love my country. If I criticize America occasionally, it is because I love my country and I seek to improve it. It is outrageous that I may be called anti-American by a member of Congress for participation in the democratic processes that strengthen America, and Representative Bachmann needs a lesson in civics on this point. I hope you will give it to her.
