The reason it isn't news is that the media in this country is all owned by corporations that have interests beyond the scope of the news media. General Electric, for instance, owns broadcast and cable networks, as well as other companies that profit greatly from government contracts, military contracts, etc.

So, they have self interests to consider. Those government contracts no doubt are more lucrative than most of us imagine, so it's not much of a surprise to see that certain things are covered up not mentioned in the news in order to protect their own interests.

We don't have an honest, accurate, full disclosure media in this country. We have a right wing-based media that feeds us propaganda for daily consumption, and they perpetuate the rumor that the media is liberal.

The facts, of course, as always, bely these statements. But most Americans can't be bothered with facts. That's why we've had George W. Bush and Dick Cheney in charge the last 7.5 years. :(
