Six years ago Pat Toomey ran against Arlen Specter with little 'support' from the RNC or RCSS and still he only lost by 2% of the vote. Pennsylvania may be turning a strong state for the democrats but when the vote is 'Republican Only' there are enough right wing crazies out there that can help put their own on the general election ballot. They can't win it but they can get the name on the ballot.
I remember that race, mind you I lived over 30 years in Pennsylvania and now live just south of the border in neighboring Delaware. I'm in the Philly metro news region so I got all the news about the Specter-Toomey Race.
Toomey is a clone of Rick Santorum - a seething right-wing fundamentalist that wants to run this country strictly by the bible even if perhaps he doesnt' live by it all the time. Toomey would be a great replacement after the Dems picked off Santorum back in 2006. Only one problem - Registered democrats in Pennsylvania are on a major upswing and the 5 counties of the Philly metro area (Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery) aren't keen on rabid right-wing republicans. This region will vote for hometown boy Specter because he doesn't froth at the mouth of extremist right-wing ideologies but will send a democrat to office for just about any other major statewide race.
The thing with Toomey and the republican primaries is simple - Philadelphia region doesn't have enough republicans to make an impact on the rest of the state. I also do not believe you can cross-over in the vote, which means it would mostly be republicans voting for republicans. With the lack of Philadelphians out to support hometown favorite Arlen Specter in the primaries - Toomey suddenly looked like a winner.
Steele's stupidity was showing support for Toomey in the primaries. Even in 2004 when a prefered Toomey was running against Specter in the primaries - the RNC & RSCC and even Rick Santorum himself all endorsed Specter. They stuck with one of their own even though I suspect secretly they were hoping for the upset. Specter is a wildcard vote for republicans and Toomey would give them another to add their brood.
Steele & the RNC should have never EVER shown any favoritism for Toomey, it wasn't needed in order for Toomey to win. Because of this, Steele just alienated the one seat that kept the so-called Republican "Checks & Balances".
I have a feeling Michael Steele will be the next person to go ESPECIALLY if Franken gets seated (like he should).
