Don't forget Ed Rendell is jewish...so by god, he'll NEVER be electable to the South.
It's amazing that everyone can use 'the South' as a direct euphemism for 'bunch of racist homophobic antisemitic rednecks', and never question "Why do we want to cater to them, anyway?"
we may never win their states, but i just can't see any reason to 'vanillafy' dem support for racial equality and tolerance for all people.
I think it is true that if you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything. Let's stop pandering and start leading by example.
