...on "This Week" this morning.
He said that Democrats need to talk more about "religion" and "values" and that we need to focus our efforts more on bringing religious people into the party. Stepanopoulos cut him off when he began quoting Bible verses.
I have no problem with religion being a part of the Dem party. I consider myself a religious person. However, it sounds like Roemer is trying to be like the Republicans, "Hey wait a minute! We like God too! See, I can quote Jesus!".
I found his rhetoric insulting and really fake.
I don't understand his strategy. Does he think that the Dems can win elections by stealing religious conservatives from the Republican party?
I also abhor his lack of spine and courage. He's allowing the Republicans to dictate Dem strategy. Secondly, he's operating as if the Republican lies about Democrats are true. Republicans insist that Dems are jerks who hate God--as if our heads spin around when we drive by a church. Roemer appears as if he's out to disprove what the Reps say about us--by being more like them. This is so wrong. You can't win that way.
The Dems are a big, tolerant tent and we welcome all faiths and all people. We need to tout that--instead of trying to position ourselves as the 700 Club Lite (The 600 Club?).
I am shocked that our Dem leaders would want this guy to spearhead the Dem party. Totally shocked.
