FREEDOM TO PILFER … In the far reaches of the right side of the political spectrum, just past the ultra-conservatives, dwell the libertarians. Their passion for individual rights (regardless of whom you love or what you smoke) and teeny-tiny government makes most modern Republicans look like old-school Democrats. But they don’t win many elections.

Ohio Secretary of State and gubernatorial candidate Kenneth Blackwell is as right-wing as they come. He’s so far right, in fact, that he may be doing the unthinkable for a God-fearin’ social conservative: stepping into libertarian territory.
A few weeks ago, Nick Brusky, Amherst area chairman for Blackwell’s campaign, wrote in an e-mail to prospective supporters that Blackwell promises to give Ohioans the “freedom to prosper by restricting government spending.” He later wrote, “I believe that government should give people the freedom to prosper.”

Ohio Libertarian Party Chairman Robert Butler couldn’t help but notice the similarities to the theme of his party’s gubernatorial campaign, devised last summer: “Freedom to Prosper.”
“We’re glad that Mr. Blackwell agrees so strongly with the Libertarian Party on this issue,” writes Butler in a statement. “I just didn’t know he would take his campaign theme directly from our Web site.”...
