the primaries to oversee tabulation and make sure their brand new machines worked ....

Read this Sequoia crap, I didn't remember that the Sequoia employee in this article who was here was from London!!!!

Except for a small glitch in getting a final printout, Smith said the new touch-screen voting machines from Sequoia Voting Systems Inc. worked well.

"The counting, it was very quick," Smith said. "It is just a wonderful system."

She said the only slowdown was having to count the non-computer generated vote.

"We had a delay with our mail-in precincts but we will correct it," Smith said. "I am very pleased and I am glad it is over."

Final results from Tuesday's balloting were compiled by 10 p.m.

"Sequoia helped us a lot with it," Smith said.

Four Sequoia representatives were on hand to help Elko County officials with using the system for the first time.

Sequoia Field Technician Dave Allen, who is a native of London and based out of the firm's Denver office, said the system seemed to have worked well in its initial use in Elko County.

"Very good, indeed," he reported.

Smith had said that 99 machines would be in service during the primary election in Elko County.

"This is our first statewide experimentation," Allen said. "It is quite a challenge to do that successfully, and that is the result of the hard work of the election officials."

Nevada Secretary of State Dean Heller mandated that all voting in the state would utilize the Sequoia system.

Allen said the system had been used in various counties in Florida and California.

"What makes this unique is that it has been implemented in every county in the state," Allen said.

He also said it was the first time that Sequoia had utilized the voter-verified paper back-up system.

Smith said it took about five seconds for the computer to read each of the wafer-sized flash cards from the voting machines.

"The value of that system is that it is very flexible," Allen said, as well as secure.

"It is completely embedded," he said.

Allen said all the votes and file information is encrypted.

"It is almost impossible (for the system to be tampered with)," he said. "Of course, even if someone did manage to do it, the chances are they would be caught."

"It is easier to attract fraud in electronics because you can easily see the trends," Allen said. "In a paper-based system it is far more difficult to see the trends."

Allen said working in Elko County was a new experience for him.

"It's a bit different than London," he pointed out.

Allen also said American ballots were much more complicated than British ballots, in which voters cast ballots only for members of Parliament and local councils.
