Suggest an anti virus that doesn't suck

Hi all,

I'd like to tap into the collective wisdom of DU for some help here. I'm looking for a good, easy to use anti virus program. I ditched Norton in favor of AVG some time ago, but I keep having problems with AVG. Hanging up on update downloads mainly, occasionally bad enough to crash my system. I tried avast, but didn't care for the interface. Any other antivirus programs out there. Free's nice, but I don't mind paying for a decent product.

Thanks ahead of time for the suggestions

...and oh yeah, I'm running windows XP home.
