10. The New Madrid fault is named because
of the New Madrid quakes of 1811-1812. New Madrid is in the bootheel of Missouri, nowhere near the Great Lakes.

John Nance's excellent earthquake book On Shaky Ground has the best coverage of those quakes I've ever read.
