6. a trick I learned in art school...
...is to discard my first idea when I'm attempting to come up with a concept (I'm a commercial artist). This has never failed me- the first idea is nearly always the most obvious, trite "solution"- never unexpected. And it is the unexpected that is creative. I consciously apply this to other areas of life whenever possible.:)
