6. GIMP is a very powerful tool with a moderately steep learning curve.
Photoshop is for those who have the money and time to learn all you can do with it. Photoshop Elements looks really good for most of us. GIMP is more than enough, especially if most of what you do is online. I only know of what is available for the Mac. If you are on Windows, there might be some other offerings that are inexpensive, but useful. All I listed above are for all platforms.

I'm going to try the Picasa beta today.
