Federal jury sentences 9/11 co-conspirator Moussaoui

RAW STORY
Published: Wednesday May 3, 2006

A federal jury has decided that al-Qaida conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui will receive a sentence of life in prison for not telling investigators what he later claimed to have known about the September 11, 2001 attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center.

After seven days of deliberation, the jury informed the court that it had come to its decision earlier this afternoon. The unexpectedly long duration of juror debate was read as an indicator that Moussaoui may have been spared death.

Earlier this month, jurors had found Moussaoui eligible for the death penalty after just 16 hours of deliberations. Eligibility had been largely considered the most difficult portion of the sentencing phase for prosecutors.

Moussaoui is the only person charged by the United States in connection with the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The 37 year old French citizen became involved in Islamic terror groups whil attending school in London in the mid-1990s. In 1998, he attended a terrorist training camp in Afghanistan. He has been linked to a Malaysia-based terror cell that aided two of the September 11 hijackers.

Verdict reached in Moussaoui case
Wed May 3, 2006 3:41pm ET

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia (Reuters) - A U.S. jury has reached a verdict in the sentencing trial of Zacarias Moussaoui, who faces the death penalty for conspiracy in connection with the September 11 attacks, the court said on Wednesday.

"The jury in U.S. v. Moussaoui has sent a note to the judge indicating they have reached a verdict," the court said in a statement.

The verdict will be read at 4:30 p.m. EDT.

Moussaoui has pleaded guilty to six counts of conspiracy in the only case brought in the United States in connection with the deadly hijacked airliner attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people.
