What happened to you challenged the conscience of our country," House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told a crowd of several hundred people at Our Lady of the Gulf Community Center on Monday.

Pelosi, who would be in line to become Speaker of the House if the Democrats regain control of the chamber, was the highest ranking member of Congress at the town hall meeting called by U.S. Rep. Gene Taylor.

The meeting, titled "Wind vs. Water: The Insurance Industry's Handling of Katrina Claims," drew gasps from the 17 lawmakers from around the country, including Rep. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawaii, and Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif.

"Shouldn't there be truth in advertising when you purchase your insurance?" asked Pelosi of the crowd. Afterward she said in an interview that Democrats, who are unveiling a Katrina-response plan Wednesday in New Orleans, want to emphasize their "different approach."

However, Pelosi acknowledged her party members could make the most progress on their agenda if they take back the House. "If you get the power, you can do it," she said.
