..when the (budget gutted) National Endowment for the Arts points out that half of Americans didn't even read a book in 2002.

...when 42 million American adults can't read at all.

...when an American Idol contestant gets more votes than any President in American history.

..when 1/3 of Americans, in a September 2006 poll, STILL believe Iraq was involved 9/11.

..when the President of the United States can openly and brazenly break laws and violate his oath of office.

...when TORTURE is voted into LAW in the US Congress.
