BAGHDAD, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- The toll from sectarian and other violence in Iraq since the bombing of a sacred Shiite shrine has jumped to more than 1,300, far more than earlier estimates.
The deaths make the past week the deadliest of the Iraqi war outside of major U.S. offensives, reports The Washington Post. The toll is more than three times the number previously reported by the U.S. military and the media, says the Post.
The sharp rise in the number of deaths is because of hundreds of unclaimed bodies at morgues. They show victims who had been shot, knifed, garroted or apparently suffocated by the plastic bags still over their heads, says the report.
