Lots of folks would choose evil. Even if they recognized it.
One of the points that Stephen King's The Stand drove home to me was that a lot of my then business associates would definitely be the folks who ended up supporting Randall Flagg out in Las Vegas. I had sort- of known that intuitively for a long time, but I didn't really consciously realize just how morally-bankrupt my Libertarian techie friends were until King laid it out in black-on-white for me; then it really rang true. And I was sadly certain that he was exactly correct.
