A COALITION of groups that oppose civil rights for gay people is pressing a boycott of the Ford Motor Company, the latest push by religious conservatives to influence how and where companies advertise.
The American Family Association — which has boycotted Target for using the word "holiday" instead of "Christmas" and Procter & Gamble for supporting the repeal of an antidiscrimination ordinance in Cincinnati that excluded gay people — has reinstated a boycott trying to force Ford to stop advertising in publications aimed at gay readers.
Renewal of the boycott is the latest twist in a controversy involving conservative groups, gay rights activists and Ford, which has a long history of working cooperatively with gay rights groups...
"We cannot, and will not, sit by as Ford supports a social agenda aimed at the destruction of the family," the groups wrote in a letter to the chief executive, William Clay Ford Jr.
