Sometimes people react in excitement out of shear embarrassment. You couldn't really see their reactions at the time he said it, only at the time they showed that nobody had gotten the answer.
I would have loved to hear the conversation between family members later on--obviously at least one person in the family had a fairly positive attitude toward her.
