BREAKING House judiciary asks Gonzales for Siegelman documents
Advertisements [?]
U.S. House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers Jr., D-Mich. today has requested from U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales documents and information concerning the prosecution of former Gov. Don Siegelman.

The committee is exploring claims that Siegelman's prosecution and others may have been part of a pattern of selective, political prosecutions by a number of U.S. Attorneys across the country.

Siegelman remains in federal prison since a judge sentenced him June 28. He's argued for years that his administration was unfairly targeted by overly aggressive prosecutors determined to bring down the state's best known Democrat. Now this panel, led by Democrats and armed with subpoena power, has taken up his cause.

In the letter, the lawmakers cite the Siegelman case; the recently overturned conviction of Wisconsin state official Georgia Thompson; and the prosecution of Dr. Cyril Wecht, a coroner in Pennsylvania, whose trial was set in October 2006, shortly before congressional elections.
