FAIRFAX

U.S. Sen. John Warner was reported to be responding well Thursday to treatment for an infection in his right leg, but an aide said the 80-year-old Republican will remain at Inova Fairfax Hospital until at least today.

Carter Cornick, Warner's chief of staff, said the senator's doctors have not fully determined the nature of the infection, which Cornick said is diminishing. Warner expects to return to his home in Alexandria this weekend and be back at work next week, Cornick said.

Warner was hospitalized Oct. 2 with an irregular heartbeat, which doctors treated by inserting a catheter into an artery in his leg and maneuvering it to his chest, where they delivered an electrical charge that restored the heart's normal rhythm.

He went back to the hospital two weeks later so doctors could repair a rupture in the artery where the catheter was inserted. His current infection is in the area around the incision and repair.
