As you all know, I am now working to support the Kucinich for President campaign. Let me tell you why I am doing this. Last April the Virginians for Peace and Accountably visited Mr. Kucinich and asked him to consider impeachment because it was warranted to punish this Administration for getting us into a war, for violating the Constitution, for torture, wiretapping and for outing a CIA agent, among many other things. We sort of crashed a PDA group from Rhode Island, but we were brave and we got in. It was a remarkable moment for me as I held out the IMPEACH HIM button to be handed to Mr. Kucinich in this crowded room. Dennis, or Denny, as he is called was very warm, witty and personable, so different than how he is portrayed in the media, usually in a confrontational setting. His wife gave us the most genuine smile I have seen on a political spouse. She truly loved this moment too - Her husband talking to a like-minded liberal group of people.
A week later he introduced House Res 333. I don't pretend to say that our visit was crucial in that or that we said or did anything extraordinary. On the contrary, we were like thousands of people in this country who have written or visited Mr. Kucinich and received a warm welcome and even more importantly, a listening ear.
Why does Representative Kucinich have a listening ear? Because he passionately cares about how people feel about the issues. He wants to make a difference. I remember reading Paul Wellstone's book, Conscience of a Liberal, and reading how Wellstone, a Jew living in Minnesota who did not eat pork, worked to help pork farmers in the South because he cared about the people, felt their issue had merit and worked to help them. That's the kind of person Kucinich is too. If he ever wanted to weigh the political issues and run a safe campaign he could play up his vast years of experience, far more than our front runners in the Democratic party have, but unlike the top tier, he doesn't like to boast about himself. Instead he is our advocate for issues regarding the Constitution, the War and Impeachment.
So I ask you to join us Friday night at Busboys and Poets, a wonderful coffee house and restaurant in Shirlington Village. Come around 6 if you want - I'll be there ordering something I shouldn't eat on that great bread of theirs, and talk for a while. Business starts at 7:00. We hope you will come and share your talents and ideas. I'm very new at this, so I need help.
I talked last night to a friend who pointed out to me that if all the friends he knew who said they believed in what Kucinich said - but Kucinich didn't have a chance, would actually vote for him, he would win. Go to my meetup linked below to sign up for this group.
Peace and Impeach!
