November 12, 2007

It's the Day After Veteran's Day, the parades are over and the flowers placed on the graves; Cheney managed - miraculously - to lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier at Arlington National Cemetary without the angry spirits of war veterans splitting open the earth and sucking the sorry chickenhawk down into the pits of hell.

Most Washington politicians are taking advantage of Veteran's Day by taking a few days off this week. The veterans of tomorrow are not as fortunate. They're charged with the continuation of the bloody and fruitless battles in the never-ending terror wars with no opportunity for their own family holiday visit back home. Sadly, those lucky enough to return home after they're finally released from service will receive far fewer benefits than their counterparts in previous (and arguably more legitimate) conflicts were given.

For example, according to researchers at Harvard Medical School revealed that millions of veterans have absolutely no access to health care for themselves or their families in VA-run facilites. The Boston Globe reports that: "Many uninsured veterans are barred from VA care because of a 2003 Bush administration order that halted enrollment of most middle-income veterans. Others are unable to obtain VA care because of unaffordable copayments for VA specialty care, waiting lists at some facilities or the lack of VA facilities in their communities. Almost two-thirds of uninsured veterans were employed, and nearly 9 out of 10 had worked within the past year."

Not only is the VA failing to provide adequate health care to veterans and their families, they're also working overtime to deny legitimate claims and benefits in the first place. That's one way to free up the clogged system - just stop accepting the claims! An editorial in today's New York Times details one personal experience: "One of my son's friends returned from Iraq and due to red tape delays in getting treatment for PTSD was a suicide. This is shameful for our great country to throw away the very men and women who had the heart to put on a uniform for her. Are we not lost?" It would appear we are.

It gets worse.

More than one in four homeless Americans in a veteran, according to a report from The National Alliance to End Homelessness. The group calls for federal housing subsidies and rental assistance as well as targeting at- risk veterans to cut homelessness. Good luck with that. I'm sure if Congress passed a law to provide more housing subsidies for veterans Bush would veto it. Too much out-of-control spending when there's a big honking war to pay for.

And they wonder why recruitment is down??

We'll discuss the plight of the veteran - and Bush's chat with Angela Merkel of Germany at the Prairie Chapel - on the program tonight! At least he didn't hug her.
