Man Had Served Time For Massachusetts Murder

BOSTON --

A convicted Massachusetts killer now accused of slaying a neighbor couple in Washington
once threatened to kill presidential candidate Mitt Romney, according to court records.

Daniel Thomas Tavares Jr., 41, was charged in Tacoma, Wash., with two counts of aggravated
first-degree murder. Tavares fatally shot Brian and Beverly Mauck, 30 and 28, after Brian
Mauck insulted him when he tried to collect a $50 debt, according to court documents.

According to records obtained by the Boston Herald, while in jail in Massachusetts for killing
his mother with a carving knife, Tavares threatened to kill then governor Romney and other
public officials when he got out of jail.

Tavares left Massachusetts after serving a 16-year sentence for the murder, but only after
Superior Court Judge Kathe M. Tuttman denied a request from prosecutors that he be held on bail
for an assault while in prison. Tuttman was appointed by Romney and her decision to release
Tavares could become an issue in the presidential campaign.

“He was the governor - he picked this judge,” said Beverly Mauck’s father, Darrel Slater, 51.
“He should be answering for what happened.” “It’s a great crime plan at the expense of everyone
else in the country,” said Ed Troyer, spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff’s office in Washington.
“It’s almost like it’s a free pass.”

A spokesman for Romney said Tavares should not have been released.

I can't stand Romney but how is he responsible for what another person decides to do?

I don't get it.
