...formerly silent white people are standing up, and in whatever way they can, talking BACK to these people. Some do it by getting up in their faces -- completely fine approach, by the way -- and others take the gently mocking or sad/disappointed or quietly reasonable approach. Although it can be extreeeeeemely satisfying to verbally clean someone's clock, there are times when other methods are more effective, if the goal is to get these people to DROP this shit and move into the 21st century. I don't want them to go away -- I want them to CHANGE.
