Whitehouse to State: Gimme the 2005 Zelikow Anti-Torture Memo
By Spencer Ackerman 5/6/09 4:02 PM

One thing that Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) wants in hand when he calls Philip Zelikow to testify next Wednesday: the memo Zelikow wrote in 2005 as an aide to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice pushing back against the Bush administration’s effort at giving torture the cover of law. A Whitehouse staffer says the senator has asked the State Department for any copies that may have survived the shredder. That makes Whitehouse the fifth member of Congress to ask for the memo — after Reps. John Conyers (D-Mich.), Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), William Delahunt (D-Mich.) and Howard Berman (D-Calif.) — and the first senator to do so.
