McCollum is trending to the middle as he runs for governor, but it is make believe.

"The conversion hasn't gone unnoticed. Democrats note that McCollum spent his 20 years in Congress deregulating banking and pushing to make personal bankruptcy tougher. He lobbied for the Mortgage Bankers Association of America after he left office in 2001.

Attacks on that record worked for Nelson in 2000; his ads blasted McCollum for his ties to banking and for taking $1.2 million from the financial-services industry.

"That's part of why he lost in 2000, so it's not surprising he's trying to change his image," said Dave Beattie, the Florida pollster who worked for Nelson and is now consulting for Sink."
