The board is split on many things,

But bring up a church and everyone gets together to hate'm and pat each other on the back.


FWIW, this church isn't my style and I'd never go there. But from a marketing perspective it sounds like he just trying to get people in the doors to hear'm talk about their religion. Really can't see why that is bringing out the hate here.
