He sold out unions because he didn't want the GOP calling him a commie, so the workers stayed home and Democrats suffered huge losses on Capitol Hill as a result.

What we have is a situation in which the leadership of the party got this idea that they had to act like Republicans. In the meantime, nobody was minding the Democratic store as it were. Now the right is energized and the progressives not. In a midterm election that is a toxic brew.
