The dome would act like an upside-down sink, suspended over the leak(s). The oil collects in the dome, and is pumped out from the top. This stops the oil from reaching the surface where it spreads for miles and miles.

We use a similar device to catch leaks in our warehouse ceiling, it collects water and directs it through a hose to a storage container. It's a temporary measure until our damn landlord fixes our roof.




It's actually a sound idea. Whether it works in practice is an entirely different matter.
