dehumanizing them, my father served in Vietnam and said he had respect for the enemy soldiers, he just had to kill them or be killed, he also hated being ordered to destroy "commie" villages and kill everyone (women kids old people) inside them. he has nighmares about the faces of kids they shot and blew up. He told me killing an armed soldier is difficult enough but their is the whole hunt or be hunted thing that does not exist when it comes to civilians.
