PIERRE, S.D. — Sen. Tim Johnson of South Dakota says the nation must do more to eliminate homelessness among military veterans.

The Democratic senator says an appropriations subcommittee he chairs will meet Thursday to discuss the Department of Veterans Affairs' five-year plan to end homelessness among veterans.

Johnson says the agency estimated that 107,000 veterans were homeless on any given night last year. He says the typical homeless veteran is a 51-year-old single male who makes less than $125 a week. But he says a growing number of female veterans are ending up homeless.

The senator says South Dakota does a good job of helping homeless veterans, but an estimated 750 were homeless in the state last year.
