You know the rest. Independent, my big fat fanny. Sounds to me like she's been brainwashed by the teabagging lot, and won't hear the voice of reason. If you feel the need to apologize in order to keep peace in the family, then go for it, but it seems to me the more we apologize for telling the truth the less likely the truth will be heard.
Good luck. I know what it's like to have closed-minded family. Most of mine are "straight, white and southern" and by now know not to talk politics or religion around me. We get along fine as long as everyone follows the "rules."
