Can Hillary still win?
With recent victories in Ohio, Texas, and Rhode Island it seems the race is on again, with an obviously divided Democratic electorate. Neither Hillary nor Barack can deliver the 2,025 delegates that would guarantee them the nomination; it's mathematically impossible.
Given that reality, should Florida and Michigan voters be given the opportunity to cast their primary votes in a meaningful way? If not, would that not in effect be disenfranchising the voters in those significant states?
The New York Times this morning offered this: "Rev. Al Sharpton has threatened to sue the Democratic National Committee if, in fact, it does allow the delegates from Florida to count . . . .Two of Mrs. Clinton’s supporters — Gov. Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania and Gov. Jon S. Corzine of New Jersey — have offered to raise $15 million of the $30 million it would take to stage new primaries in Florida and Michigan. But others are talking about cheaper ways of holding do-overs, perhaps through mail-in voting."
While Obama easily won the Wyoming primary Saturday and is favored to win Mississippi today, Clinton is favored to take Pennsylvania, which doesn't vote until April 22nd. Seems like light years from now.
The Washington Post reports that: "with Obama holding an advantage of about 140 pledged convention delegates over Clinton, his allies argued strenuously that the outcome of the contest should be determined by delegates awarded to winners of primaries or caucuses, and not by the 796 Democratic superdelegates. Former Senate majority leader Thomas A. Daschle (S.D.), a co-chair of the Obama campaign, said it would be a 'travesty' if Obama maintains his lead among pledged delegates but an advantage among superdelegates allows Clinton to win the nomination.
'I don't see how we could possibly do anything other than respect the will of the people who have voted in caucus and primary states all over the country,' he said on NBC's 'Meet the Press.' 'And what it would say to the world, to the country, that we'd overturn the verdict of those . . . elections would be travesty for . . . the party and for the country.' Edward G. Rendell, the governor of Pennsylvania and a Clinton supporter, countered by arguing that "the traditional role of the superdelegates is to determine who's going to be our strongest candidate."
Is it November yet?
