40. If they do decide to be part of Mexico, they're going to have to decide
Which Drug Cartel or which American Multi-National business is going to own what cities or areas. Heck, even if they don't decide to be part of Mexico, they're going to have to make that decision.
They think they're going to live like some privileged patron in a telenovella if they just throw off the shackles of Washington? The middle class in Texas is in dire straights and on life support supplied by the Federal Government, just like the middle class everywhere - if Texas - or if California or Arizona, for that matter (and I live in San Diego, born in the SouthWest, so I know a bit of what I'm talking about) leave, the middle class will dry up, leaving the SW to turn into a culture of patrons and peons.
And as my Mother always told me, there's only so many spots for bosses available - most people will be workers for the rest of their lives.
And in a patron-based society as you find in Mexico, those middle class freeptiods who think "we'll be rich, if only the Gumm'ent got off our backs, givin' our hard earned pay to the lazy poor", could even more quickly find themselves sharing a row of hovels in a working class ghetto with those same "lazy poor" if they make the mistake of pissing off the local big boss.

Those fools have no idea what they're wishing for. Or rather, the people who want to be patrons know exactly what they want, and are trying to foster an atmosphere of willing fools who will eagerly give everything up to someone who tells them what they want to hear.

And yeah, race and privilege has a lot to do with this. It makes me feel like weeping when I see how these self-isolated fools destroy their own future out of greed and cowardness.
