... run from predators. A clear complexion correlates to free of smallpox, chicken pox, measles, plague, etc. Mammaries are for nursing children. Flexible hips indicate an ability to bear children. Strong backs indicate an ability to do stoop labor. So, there are LOTS of visual clues to natural selection.

At the same time, the "pleasant demeanor" gets a free pass in social settings and isn't subjected to the kind of scrutiny some might receive.
