Forsaken by (San Diego city) council, union turns to God

The labor union representing San Diego's blue-collar workers is praying God can help "justice and mercy enter the hearts" of the City Council and Mayor Jerry Sanders, according to a new flier.

The council imposed a one-year contract on the union April 14 that forces its 1,990 workers to give up about 6 percent of their pay and benefits.

In the flier, the union is asking its members to attend a May 3 evening mass at St. Joseph's Cathedral Church, 1535 Third Ave., to pray the council and mayor have a change of heart and rescind the "punitive, anti-union" contract.

"It is important that this decision be mitigated and corrected so that the economic situation in San Diego's most vulnerable communities does not worsen," the flier reads.

After the mass, union members are going to walk to City Hall where they will remain until the council meeting on Tuesday.

I know a labor union is a private organization, but this seems a little inappropriate.
