I really do have a visceral sense of shame over what this country -- MY country -- has done.

And now it turns out that erstwhile culprits like Lynndie England and Charles Grainer were, in effect, hung out to dry after being issued orders to act out their sickest fantasies, like puppets with shit-eating grins. And the only officer who tried to put a foot down, Janice Karpinski, was likewise deep-sixed (though not sentenced to prison).

What the hell does that do to someone? We know how much the victims of that (our) regime suffered, but what does it do to the "good soldier Schweiks" of the world? There are thousands of them, and they are all coming home.

What the hell have we done?
