Fear of legislation, violence drives surge in weapons purchases, Kalamazoo retailers say

KALAMAZOO -- While the recession continues to slow some industries to a near halt, gun sales appear to be -- pardon the pun -- firing away.

Retail sales of guns and ammunition (particularly for handguns) are up since last fall as hunters and gun enthusiasts worry that President Barack Obama and the Democrats are going to outlaw some kinds of guns and ammunition or may greatly regulate weapons people may own.

"Right now the Democrats are making it pretty good for gun sales," said Randy VanDam, owner of D&R Sports Center in Oshtemo Township.

VanDam said his sales for February and March were up almost 40 percent from the same period a year ago. And that is a continuation of a surge that started last fall.

"When the polls started to swing more Democratic, so did the demand (for guns)." he said.
