The people of Venezuela have passed a Constitution which provides a right to free medical care, free public education to the doctoral level, adequate nutrition and housing for all. It provides the right to unionize and to a living wage for all workers.

The labor laws actually have a presumption in favor of the workers. The law against domestic violence includes psychological violence, prohibits sexual harassment in the work place, and even prohibits intimidation by medical personnel during child birth. Services, such as psychological counseling, alternative housing, job training and childcare are provided to victims of domestic violence.

The Chavez government is in the process of replacing an inhuman capitalist system, which puts profits above all else, with a human system that puts fulfilling human needs and encouraging human development above all else.

We desperately need to do likewise in the U.S. -- to abolish the capitalist economic system and create a social system which meets human needs and allows individuals to develop their talents and creativity.
