Reid Hits GOP With Goldman Charges

Harry Reid goes there, tying the SEC charges against Goldman to GOP obstructionism of financial regulatory reform:

“Millions of Nevadans and Americans are struggling every day to make ends meet and stay in their homes. Any accusations about wrongdoing that could affect Nevada families should be taken seriously and fully investigated. I’m pleased that the Obama Administration is using all of the tools in its arsenal to bring accountability to Wall Street and standing up for homeowners and small businesses across America.

“This is also why we need to pass strong Wall Street reform this year. When we clean up Wall Street, we will establish clear rules of the road to help keep Nevada families in their homes while protecting consumers, investors and financial institutions. We will stop banks from becoming ‘too big to fail’ and end taxpayer bailouts. Republicans should stop obstructing our efforts to hold Wall Street accountable so that Main Street can once again prosper.”

There’s been some debate in Dem circles today over how hard to push linking the charges against Goldman to GOP obstructionism. Some Dems were worried that high profile Dems connected with Goldman (Jon Corzine, Robert Rubin) would make it tough to use the charges against the firm to ratchet up pressure on the GOP not to block reform. And GOPers have been circulating word of Goldman’s big contributions to Obama’s campaign to pre-empt this attack line.

But others have been arguing that the optics of the GOP filibustering reform right after the initiation of a big Federal action against Goldman are deadly, and that Dems should aggressively tie the two together. The question is how loudly Dems will push this as the standoff intensifies.
