You apparently need some background on the whole tax deal matter:

Obama did not include the Democrats in his "negotiations" with the Republicans. He left them out-of-the-loop -- completely. It "came to this in the first place" because they were never allowed to have a say in the first place -- or in the second place, or in the third place. Speier is quite clear on this in the article. Obama spoke with the Republicans, but he did not speak to the Democrats. The White House has openly admitted this.
