I say let's stop using it, apologize for its previous use (while acknowledging that it has had an important use in the past) and move on.

Sometimes, in our ignorance we make dreadful mistakes. As a parent, I've learned that sometimes I just have to realize I've unintentionally screwed up, apologize, and get back down to being the adult.
