In its first official reaction to the killing last Sunday of Al Qaeda founder Osama Bin Laden by US commandos deep inside Pakistani territory, the Pakistani military Thursday threatened to put more strain on the country’s already fragile relations with the United States if similar American incursions are repeated.

The Associated Press yesterday said the warning came even as the Pakistani Army acknowledged what it termed its own shortcomings, referring to widely held suspicions that Pakistani authorities had sheltered Bin Laden for years, long before his assassination by US Navy SEALs earlier this week.

The statement, issued by Army headquarters but not attributed to any single military official, said a review is being made regarding the extent of the continued American military presence in Pakistan. No additional details were given.

Analysts said the brief Pakistani Army communique was also meant to assure the Pakistani people following loudly voiced popular dismay over the army’s inability to prevent the US assault which constituted a clear breach in the country’s sovereignty .
