4. Just because the map says there's a road, doesn't mean it's passable.
I was exploring southwest of Tonopah NV. looking for an old mine, when I ran into an old prospector in a 4WD. He asked me what we were doing out there and I told him why we were there. He reminded me that the road we were on hadn't been graded since 1938, even though the map indicated it was serviceable. He just shook his head in disbelief.
"...sure, Mabel, let's take this shortcut and save 50 miles."
