A Cuban government spokesman offered to reporters "We have killed the 'Bin Laden' of the Western Hemisphere today and all Cubans can sleep a bit easier tonight knowing this man has been brought to justice."

The operation by an elite unit of the Cuban military slipped ashore late Monday night and raided Posada's beachfront compound. Also killed in the raid were one of Posada's sons, an aide and a young woman. The Cuban team was also able to confiscate several computers and other documents during the forty minute raid. There were no injuries to the Cuban soldiers during the raid.

The Cuban government has long accused Posada of the 1976 bombing of an airliner that killed 73 people and of bombings in Cuba as late as 1997 which killed a Canadian tourist. The attack on the airliner was the largest loss of life in a terrorist attack on an airliner up until the events of 9/11 in the United States.

The Cuban government said the killing was legal, justified, proper and "an act of national self-defense."

"Let me make something very clear," retiring Cuban Attorney General Juan Escalona Reguera told reporters on Tuesday, "the operation in which Luis Posada Carriles was killed was lawful, legitimate and appropriate in every way. He was part of an organization that conducted the attacks of Oct. 6th 1976. He admitted his involvement."

Reguera said it's lawful to "target an enemy commander in the field," just as U.S. forces did during World War II when it shot down a plane carrying Japanese Adm. Isoroku Yamamoto.

Carriles was "by my estimation, and the estimation of our Justice Department, a lawful military target, and the operation was conducted consistent with our law with our values," the attorney general said.
"It was a matter of self-defense for our country to kill or capture this man. We feel justified in killing him Florida because the Americans were either unwilling or unable to bring him to justice".

How would/should America react to this should it happen?
