Give Peace a Chance
May 24th, 2011
Who knows why President Obama thought he could make a difference in the never-ending conflict between Israel and Palestine? Clearly Israeli leader Binyamin Netanyahu is not ready to make nice.

The Israeli Prime Minister is visiting Washington, D.C. and addressed the U.S. Congress in a strident speech and explained the failure of the peace process this way:

“Why has peace not been achieved? Because so far the Palestinians have been unwilling to accept a Palestinian state if it meant accepting a Jewish state alongside it. President Abbas must do what I have done. I have stood before my people and I have said I will accept a Palestinian state. It’s time for President Abbas to stand before his people and say: I will accept a Jewish state. Those six words will change history … With those words, I will be prepared to make a far-reaching compromise.”

Guest Blog – Must Read!

Hi Truthseekers!

In place of my Diary this week, please read this excellent essay by writer David Sep about taking pride in our political Progressiveness.

We should never be defensive about our positions!

Reclaiming the Liberal Badge of Honor

Those who pride ourselves of being of the progressive or liberal persuasion, are happy to embrace monikers and nicknames that define others; teabaggers, birthers, truthers, wingnuts, etc., but, when it comes to terms that describe those on the left, we are… a little touchy, a little defensive. Some have even developed a kind of inferiority complex around the L-word, so successfully has the Republican party and its hyper-partisan operatives like Karl Rove and Frank Luntz, managed to demonize and rebrand the term “liberal.” Many have internalized the right’s messaging and have come to view the word “liberal” as a pejorative, forgetting the proud traditions and achievements that characterize the liberal political philosophy. Make no mistake, some of the harshest characterizations have come from within the Democratic Party itself, particularly President Obama’s inner circle in response to pressure from a base determined to keep the present administration honest.

In her article “Professional Left and Proud of It,” writer Leslie Thatcher of Truthout, recounts former White House spokesperson Robert Gibb’s slam in using the term “professional left” and, Rahm Emanuel, the former White House chief of staff who “used a far more offensive term to describe liberal administration critics.”

Thatcher rolls out an unapologetic description of the liberal base’s core values, and by extension, those in the Truthout organization: “We still accept many “quaint” notions as true and valid: that torture is absolutely wrong under all circumstances, and that being rich and/or powerful should not provide immunity from justice or criticism. We still hold strongly that we must arrest climate change; switch energy, transportation, and food production technologies; create jobs for those who want to work, provide healthcare for all; stop the toxic chemical and radiation poisoning of our air, soils, water and bodies; educate ourselves to be citizens, not consumers; beat our tanks and aircraft carriers and planes and drones and Humvees into ploughshares; pursue justice; restore the commons; delight in the works of our artists and artisans, our intellectuals and our neighbors; live in dignity and peace.

“Proud of] Being Liberal” one of Facebook’s more popular liberal sites boasting over 36,000 “likes,” questions, then admonishes its readers on the subject of what it means to be a liberal : “Being Liberal — what does it mean to YOU?” If you are PROUD to say I’M A LIBERAL! SHARE this page with your friends. We MUST bring back the PRIDE of wearing the LIBERAL badge! The word ‘LIBERAL’ was stolen from us… Let’s reclaim it !”

The Being Liberal site reminds its readers of significant liberal accomplishments: “Liberals got women the right to vote. Liberals got African-Americans the right to vote. Liberals created Social Security and lifted millions of elderly people out of poverty. Liberals ended segregation. Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act. Liberals created Medicare. Liberals passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act.”

The site’s administrator who self-identifies, ironically as “W,” had this to day about why he started the “Being Liberal” Facebook page: “A deep, visceral disgust and curiosity combined 18 months ago to get the Facebook “Being Liberal” page started. For weeks I was bombarded by Facebook paid ads for a ‘Being Republican” page, adorned with Reagan’s face. A quick search showed that there was no counterbalance on Facebook. At the time, most of liberals still were drunk with “Yes, we can,” success and started to engage in a favorite divisive activity — discussing the difference between being “progressive” and being “liberal.” In the meantime the dark conservative forces were uniting in creation of a Frankenstein — the Tea Party. I have noticed how rare it is to hear in public, “I am a Liberal, and proud of it.” I love the word. It has the most beautiful and rich etymology — with ‘free,’ ‘noble,’ ‘generous,’ and ‘people’ at its core. How could anybody have any objections to be labeled with that?”

“W” said he thinks he knows how the term “Liberal” got so turned around: “By definition being liberal means to allow diversity, to be open to new ideas and to avoid rigid definitions. So, nobody really defended that poor word when Conservatives started to abuse the word in every possible way… we let them pick it up and gang-rape it in public. We liberals are guilty of leaving the word alone, without help in the Wild West of contemporary politics. We need to bring back the pride in wearing that name, changing it is an easier way to deal with victimization but only by sticking to it and owning it we can reclaim the great liberating feeling of saying — Yes, I am Liberal and proud of it.”

Sometimes, as they say, life imitates art. In a dramatic YouTube video clip of the former hit TV series West Wing, Matt Santos played by Jimmy Smits, riffs on the definition of the word “Liberal,” delivering this classic line to his wily debate opponent: “So when you try to hurl that label at my feet, ‘Liberal,’ as if it were something to be ashamed of, something dirty, something to run away from, it won’t work. Because I will pick up that label and I will wear it as a badge of honor.”

For writer Chris Hedges, the badge of honor — the very essence of what it means to be truly liberal, has been hopelessly corrupted. In his Truthdig column “Why Liberal Sellouts Attack Prophets Like Cornell West,” Hedges delivers a stinging indictment of the liberal class and its capitulation to the corporate state:

“The liberal class, which attempted last week to discredit the words my friend Cornel West spoke about Barack Obama and the Democratic Party, prefers comfort and privilege to justice, truth and confrontation. Its guiding ideological stance is determined by what is most expedient to the careers of its members. It refuses to challenge, in a meaningful way, the decaying structures of democracy or the ascendancy of the corporate state. It glosses over the relentless assault on working men and women and the imperial wars that are bankrupting the nation. It proclaims its adherence to traditional liberal values while defending and promoting systems of power that mock these values. The pillars of the liberal establishment—the press, the church, culture, the university, labor and the Democratic Party—all honor an unwritten quid pro quo with corporations and the power elite, as well as our masters of war, on whom they depend for money, access and positions of influence. Those who expose this moral cowardice and collaboration with corporate power are always ruthlessly thrust aside.”

The defense of Princeton professor Cornell West’s recent comments characterizing Obama as, “a black mascot of Wall Street oligarchs and… corporate plutocrats” not withstanding, Hedges gives us a reason to worry not only about the “liberal” moniker, but about the very soul of liberalism. It is an uncomfortable examination, but one which must be made by those who value their liberal heritage and liberalism’s future.
