New York cops defy order to arrest hundreds of ‘Occupy Albany’ protesters

The most positive element of this refusal of police to intervene forcefully was the consideration they showed for the interests of children, families and the elderly in spite of pressure from governor and mayor. Police behaving sanely towards the vulnerable is something we need to applaud, and being concerned for the public's well being versus political interests ought to be 'standard operating procedure' for all police forces:

the crowd included elderly people and many others who brought their children with them.

"There was a lot of discussion about how it would look if we started pulling people away from their kids and arresting them ... and then what do we do with the children?" one officer said. http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Under-pressure-to-make-arrests-police-and-2232934.php
