True, the skin is an excellent barrier, and I trust the skin on my hands to keep everyday germs out of my body, but I don't trust my hands anywhere around my eyes, nose or mouth because I'm never sure if they're conveying something other than run-of-the-mill germs to those particular mucous membranes. I embrace the concept of exposing myself to 'background' flora and fauna as a means to keeping my immune system tuned-up, but I draw the line at pathogens that can make me sick; that's a risk my immune system and I are unwilling to take.
