For that matter, how can Obama try to scare us all with the prospect of a Republican presidency, when he so regularly assures his own supporters that he's helpless without massive majorities in both houses of Congress?

Which is it? Republicans are either reasonable "folks" with good ideas that are worth listening to, or they're malicious assholes. The president either has massive personal influence or he does not. You can't have it both ways.
